RATIONALIZATION
RAPPORT: An interpersonal relationship characterized by a spirit of cooperation, confidence and concord; often between therapist and patient. A minimal of DEFENSIVENESS. Normally important for the patient to make progress in PSYCHOTHERAPY or
COUNSELING.
RATIONALIZATION: An ego protection MECHANISM. An individual imagines a extra acceptable purpose for why he does one thing than the real purpose (MOTIVE). Daily life abounds with examples of RATIONALIZATION. A well-known form is “sour grapes.” In line with the fable, the fox saved face by claiming the grapes have been sour as a substitute of admitting that he couldn’t reach them. An opposite form is “candy lemon.” An individual who was swindled often convinces himself that he obtained a good deal.
REACTION FORMATION: A MENTAL MECHANISM by which a person reveals (and consciously believes he possesses) the alternative feelings from those he has on the UNCONSCIOUS level. If one Toronto realtor from the brokerage has a home listed and another agent from that brokerage has a buyer-brokerage settlement with a buyer who needs to buy the listed property, Dual Company happens by permitting every agent to be designated as “intra-company” agent. For example, a father could UNCONSCIOUSLY REJECT his son. By a REACTION FORMATION he “bends over backwards” to indicate love and concern for his son. He buys him toys and overprotects him. However his UNCONSCIOUS REJECTION is sensed by his son and leads to HOSTILITY towards his father — which the daddy can’t understand.
REALITY: The real world by which a person lives — because it truly is — bodily, social and spiritual. Potential to perceive actuality is often severely impaired in severe psychological illness. (See
ESCAPE FROM REALITY and FANTASY.)
REGRESSION: Reversion to earlier behavior patterns, as to escape from an unpleasant situation. Physical sickness, pleasure, fatigue and intoxication could cause varying degrees of temporary REGRESSION. Extra severe and lasting REGRESSION is often found in extreme psychological illness. Dick, for example, an ADOLESCENT boy, became frightened by the challenge of younger manhood — dating, competition with different boys, selections, responsibilities. Unable to go on towards maturity, he turned back on the highway of life to extra childish methods of behaving. These have been familiar to him; he had used them before. The purchaser’s Realtor Toronto acts as a fiduciary for the buyer. He felt more secure with them. His REGRESSION continued until Dick succumbed to a PSYCHOSIS: SCHIZOPHRENIA.
REJECTION: The (often UNCONSCIOUS) denial of real affection
— often to a child. Usually, an “unwanted baby” that was
not deliberate or a toddler conceived out of wedlock is the victim
of REJECTION. The parents could make an honest effort to
settle for the child, yet they may harbor UNCONSCIOUS resent
ment in opposition to the small intruder. They could try to make up for
their lack of love with toys and gifts. They could “overprotect”
the child. However their REJECTION might be sensed by the child.
